Robegano
A brief history of Robegano
Robegano is a hamlet of Salzano, in the metropolitan city of Venice. Its history dates back to Roman times, when the area was part of the agricultural centuriazione of the city of Altino. In the eleventh century, the city of Treviso promoted settlements for the exploitation and defense of its own territory, and it was during this period that Robegano was born. The first written reference to this village dates back to 1154. The territory of Robegano was shaken by various military events during the fourteenth century and definitively passed to the Republic of Venice in 1388. It then became a hamlet of Salzano in 1808.
Monuments and places of interest
Religious architecture
The church of Robegano is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Grace and Saints James the Greater and Saint Christopher. It is a parish church dependent on the vicariate of Noale of the Diocese of Treviso, and was originally a chapel of the parish church of Martellago. On April 14, 1534, a miraculous event occurred in Robegano: Costantina, a disabled girl, was healed while praying in front of a fourteenth-century icon, then displayed in a chapel near the church. On September 13, the construction of a new parish church-sanctuary began to house the sacred image. The work was completed on March 24, 1603.
Civil architecture
The castle of Robegano, built in the thirteenth century by the Tempesta family and then passed to the family of the Da Robegano, stood on the border between the territories of Padua and Treviso. In poor condition at the time of the Venetian conquest, it was demolished along with other nearby castles for strategic reasons after Venice's defeat in the war against the League of Cambrai. Today, only a portion of the walls remains.
Events and traditions
Every year, on the third weekend of June, the festival of Saint Christopher, the patron saint of Robegano, is held. The festival lasts three days and includes a rich program of events, including the traditional race of the barrels. On this occasion, the districts of the town compete in a race with wine barrels pushed by four runners. The winning district is awarded a banner.
How to get to Robegano
Robegano is located a few kilometers from Treviso and Padua, and can be reached by car or bus. By car, you can take the A4 Venice-Trieste motorway and exit at Noventa di Piave/San Donà di Piave. From there, follow the signs for Martellago and then for Robegano. By bus, you can take the ACTV company from Treviso or Padua and get off at the Robegano stop.
