Sala Comacina
Welcome to Sala Comacina
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Sala Comacina, a wonderful municipality in the province of Como in Lombardy, famous for its millenary history and scenic beauty.
Origin of the Name
The name Sala Comacina has ancient and interesting origins. It seems that in the past it indicated the place where taxes were collected by the Lombards who had conquered Isola Comacina. What a fascinating story!
History
Sala Comacina is not only a beautiful place but also rich in history. In fact, during some excavations in Colombera in 1857, some tombs dating back to the Roman era were found. Additionally, Sala Comacina was equipped with a military fortress belonging to a defense complex on Isola Comacina.
But let's move to modern times. In 1807, a decree of administrative reorganization of the Kingdom of Italy sanctioned the annexation of Colonno and Ossuccio to Sala Comacina. Later, in 1863, a Royal decree changed its name.
Symbols
The coat of arms and flag of Sala Comacina were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 1962. The coat of arms depicts a red castle representing the one that existed in the Middle Ages, placed on a symbolic natural strip of land of the Isola Comacina, near the waters of Lake Como. The two swords symbolize the fierce struggles fought for the possession of the castle and the territory, between the Milanese and the Como people.
Curiosities
But Sala Comacina is not only history but also curiosity. Did you know that in the 17th century, the town hosted a candle factory? How interesting!
In addition, throughout history, Sala Comacina and Colonno formed a single communal entity for many years. In 1925, however, the fraction of San Bartolomeo was transferred from the Municipality of Sala to that of Colonno, and from 1928 to 1950, the three municipalities formed a single administrative entity called "Comune di Isola Comacina".
