Physical geography

Sadali: nature, history, and culture in Sardinia.

Territory

The territory of Sadali is very extensive, about 4988 hectares, and develops around a vast dolomitic-carbonate plateau characterized by a strong karst phenomenon. The plateau, located at an average height between 750 and 800 meters above sea level, is a natural water reservoir and feeds numerous springs and waterfalls. Unfortunately, the vegetation is scarce, but it is possible to admire remains of an ancient forest that once covered much of the territory.

The undergrowth is rich in typical Mediterranean species such as junipers, strawberry trees, heathers, and rosemary. Furthermore, the territory of Sadali is dotted with caves that represent a popular tourist destination.

Geological conformation

The territory of Sadali is characterized by the powerful dolomitic carbonate deposits of the Mesozoic that rest on the Paleozoic metamorphic rocks. The area has evolved over the millennia, showing a very interesting stratigraphic succession, with archaeological evidence dating back to the Upper Neolithic, the Nuragic civilization, and up to the Punic and Roman civilization.

The Paleozoic basement, mainly consisting of low-grade metamorphic rocks folded during the Hercynian orogeny, also shows alternations of carbonate and lithic levels attributable to the Siluro-Devonian. The complex Hercynian deformation is clearly visible in many faults and folds that cross the area.
