Hello everyone! Today I'll be talking about Sabbio Chiese, a municipality with a population of 3924 located in the province of Brescia, Lombardy.

Sabbio Chiese: history and beauty between Garda and Idro

Physical geography

Territory

Sabbio Chiese is situated between Lake Garda and Lake Idro and is characterized by a landscape of sand terraces and rocks deposited on the shore of the Chiese river that runs through the territory.

History

Sabbio Chiese has a long and interesting history. Until 1616, it was simply known as Sabbio. The name Sabbio comes from the Latin word "sabulum", which means sand, and the suffix "Chiese" was added later because of its position on the Chiese river.

The municipality has hosted several civilizations over the years, including the Etruscans, Rhaetians, and Celts. During Roman domination, Sabbio Chiese became an important center in the valley, as demonstrated by the presence of three inscriptions cataloged by Mommsen.

The oldest church in Sabbio Chiese is probably that of Pavone, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The fortress of Sabbio, on the other hand, was part of the valley's defensive system and played an important role in various historical events such as the passage of Barbarossa in 1162. After the Visconti domination, the municipality was aggregated to the quadra of Montagna by Venice.

During the 16th century, Sabbio Chiese was occupied by French troops and the parish church of San Michele was stripped by the Landsknechts.

Symbols

Sabbio Chiese has a well-recognizable symbol, namely a shield divided into four parts. The first part features a red cross on a silver background, the second represents a rampant lion on a golden background, the third part is red and represents a silver lily, while the last part is silver with a red cross.
