Hi friends! Today I will talk to you about Turin, a beautiful city in northern Italy. Turin is the fourth largest city in Italy by population, with 842,472 inhabitants as of October 31st, 2022, and is the heart of the Turin Metropolitan Area, which has around 1.7 million inhabitants.

Archaeology and Monuments

With a two-thousand-year history, Turin preserves many archaeological treasures and historic monuments. The city was founded in the 3rd century BC by the Taurini and then transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name of Iulia Augusta Taurinorum. Later, it was ruled by the Ostrogoths and in the 11th century became the capital of the Duchy of Turin. In 1563, it was declared the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. From 1720 until 1861, Turin served as the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, then of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1946.

Turin also has a great UNESCO heritage, such as some palaces and areas belonging to the Savoy residences in Piedmont and the area of the Po hills.

International Exhibitions and Sports

Turin hosted the International Exhibition of Turin in 1911 and in 2006 it hosted the XX Winter Olympic Games. Since 2021, the city has been the venue for the ATP Finals and in 2022 it hosted the Eurovision Song Contest.

Turin is located in the plain delimited by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po. The latter crosses the city from south to north, facing the mouth of some alpine valleys such as the Susa Valley, the Lanzo Valleys and the Sangone Valley.

Turin is also known for being the hub of the Italian automotive industry and is home to the Automobile Museum.
