Roveredo di Guà: Veneto's treasure

Etymology

The name Roveredo di Guà dates back to the early Middle Ages, when the area was characterized by a large number of oaks along the rivers. These trees were called "roburi", which in the Veronese dialect means oak. To distinguish this area from other similar ones, the name of the Guà river, which crosses its territory, was added.

History

The history of Roveredo di Guà is linked to that of the events of the surrounding territory. The colonization by the survivors of the battle of Azio led to the presence of a large number of scattered dwellings in the territory, which then progressively organized into a real center. However, the lack of alternatives to agriculture led to strong emigration to other territories in the 19th and 20th centuries.

However, with the birth of mutual aid societies and peasant leagues, the local economy underwent a sharp recovery. Following Pope Leo XIII's Encyclical Rerum Novarum, rural credit unions and solidarity groups were born within the parishes, which later turned into popular banks. Thanks to these structures, Roveredo di Guà managed to become an active society, where growth was supported internally within the community itself.
