Castiglione Mantovano
Castiglione Mantovano, the history of a Lombard village
Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Castiglione Mantovano, a village in the municipality of Roverbella, in the province of Mantua. Known for the beauty of its castle, Castiglione Mantovano has a very interesting and ancient history.
History
Located along the ancient road that connected Mantua to Verona, Castiglione Mantovano has Roman origins. However, the history of the village is closely linked to the noble families that held control over it in the centuries that followed. In the 12th century, the village was under the dominion of the Canossa family, who made it a "free borough" together with Borgoforte (now Borgo Virgilio) and Borgofranco sul Po. Later, it passed under the rule of the Bonacolsi and Gonzaga families, until the fall of the dynasty. Since then, Castiglione Mantovano has been one of the most important autonomous municipalities in the area, until its definitive aggregation to Roverbella in 1782.
Monuments and places of interest
The castle of Castiglione Mantovano is undoubtedly the most famous building in the village. Built in the 14th century, it was enlarged in the 15th century under the rule of the Gonzaga family. Today it is a splendid example of Renaissance architecture, with beautiful gardens and an interior decorated with frescoes and stuccoes.
