Rovato

Rovato: a journey through history

Hi friends, today I will tell you the story of Rovato, an Italian commune located in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy.

Origin of the commune

Rovato seems to have been a center of secondary importance compared to other nearby cities such as Coccaglio and Erbusco until the early Middle Ages. The name of the commune may come from the word "robus" which means brambles in the local dialect and which well describes the mountain on which the city was built.

But the history of Rovato dates back much earlier than the Middle Ages, to the first settlements on the Franciacorta hills surrounding the city in the first millennium BC. Remains of these settlements have been found on Mount Orfano, on which, according to legend, a temple dedicated to the Sun was built.

History of Rovato: from prehistory to the city

The Roman period

After the expulsion of the Cenomani population, which settled in the area in the 6th century BC, by the Romans in the 1st century BC, the city began to develop around the "castrum" and Franciacorta grew in importance. In Roman civilization, the territory of Rovato was crossed by an important Roman road, the Via Gallica.

The Lombard era

With the fall of the Roman Empire, Rovato suffered a series of attacks that ended with the arrival of the Lombards in 568 AD. These, converted to Christianity, restructured the Roman fortification present in the area of the current convent of SS. Annunciata making Rovato the institutional center of ancient Franciacorta and built on Mount Orfano a church dedicated to Saint Michael, the warrior angel patron of the Lombards.

The Communal era

In the 12th century, the name Rovato appeared for the first time and the settlement began to form in the underlying plain. In the communal age, Rovato participated in the Guelf and Ghibelline factions and in 1265 was conquered by Charles of Anjou. In 1385 it entered the Venetian orbit. In 1419 its castle was besieged by Francesco Bussone. After all of the Brescia territory passed under the Republic of Venice, Rovato enjoyed privileges and exemptions and was the seat of a vicariate.

Rovato becomes a city

On June 2, 2014, Rovato obtained the title of city.
