The political history of Giuseppe Valditara
Giuseppe Valditara is an Italian politician who served as a minister without portfolio in the Berlusconi IV government. Before entering politics, he graduated in Law from the University of Salerno and worked as a professional journalist.
Biography
Born in Ariano Irpino, a small town in the province of Avellino, in 1957, Valditara joined the Christian Democracy party in 1975. In 1979, he founded the "Proposta '80" movement, close to the positions of Gerardo Bianco and in opposition to the provincial and national leadership of Ciriaco De Mita.
He married Maria Grazia Spatola, a pharmacist, in 2003, and they had three daughters: Mariangela, Daria, and Federica. His best man at his wedding was none other than Silvio Berlusconi.
Political career
Nineties and two-thousands
Valditara was first elected as a regional councilor of Campania in the Italian regional elections of 1990 on the Christian Democracy's lists, and then as secretary of the Regional Council. After the dissolution of the Christian Democracy party, he joined the Italian People's Party (1994), with whom he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in the 1994 Italian general election in the Avellino electoral district.
In 1995, in the Campania local elections, he was elected as councilor of Avellino for the Forza Italia (1994) - Italian People's Party list.
In the 1996 Italian general election, he ran again for the Chamber in the same district for the Pole of Freedoms but was defeated.
In the 1999 European elections in Italy, he ran for the United Christian Democrats in the Southern Italy constituency and garnered 8,180 votes, becoming the first among the unelected candidates.
In 2000, he was elected as a councilor for Lombardy's regional council in the list "Per la Lombardia" of the center-right candidate president Roberto Formigoni.
Valditara returned to Parliament in the 2001 Italian general election, when he was elected in the Rho constituency for the House of Freedoms under the Italian Christian Democrats and later the Union of Christian and Centre Democrats party's quota.
Recent activities
After serving as a minister without portfolio in the Berlusconi IV government, Valditara was appointed national secretary of the Christian Democracy for Autonomies in June 2005.
Moreover, Valditara is a member of the National Committee of the Movement for Autonomy, an Italian political party that promotes fiscal federalism.
