Capradosso

Welcome to Capradosso!

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a small village in the municipality of Rotella, in the Marche region: Capradosso. This little town has an ancient and interesting history, so if you're curious, come with me and discover Capradosso.

Physical geography

Capradosso is located on the Rotella side of Monte Ascensione. In the past, the town was located to the west of its current position, in an area called "Capradosso Vecchio". However, the town was abandoned due to landslides and rockfalls. Today, in the northern part of the town, you can admire the remains of an ancient tower, ruined castle walls and foundations.

Discover the history and monuments of Capradosso.

Monuments and places of interest

Capradosso has two churches: San Rocco and Santi Lucia e Rocco, both dating back to the seventeenth century. In addition, you can find the remains of castle walls and a tower. According to tradition, there were four towers in the town. How about taking a walk to discover these monuments?

History

According to some historians, Capradosso was founded by some residents of Ascoli Piceno who fled from Duke Faroaldo who was plundering the province. Another version of the founding of the town is that it was built by monks around the year one thousand, who called it that because it resembled the back of a goat. Most of Capradosso's history has been lost, as the town's municipal archive was destroyed under the rubble of the old Capradosso and part of it was tampered with during the aggregation to the Municipality of Rotella.

During the period of the Papal States, Capradosso was granted privileges by the Holy See and was erected as a free commune for the services rendered to the Church. The little town was a free commune until 1870, when it was deprived of its administrative autonomy and aggregated to Rotella. The most important character the town has had in its history was Fra Marcellino da Capradosso, born in 1873 and died in 1909.

Fra Marcellino da Capradosso

Fra Marcellino da Capradosso was a Capuchin friar with great faith and piety. He was very humble, obedient and did many penances. But above all, he was very charitable with everyone, especially with sinners, the troubled, and the sick. He died at only 36 years old of tubercular peritonitis, contracted while taking care of a patient. Everyone today remembers him as an example of humanity and charity.
