Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Turin, a beautiful and fascinating city located in northern Italy. Known as the fourth largest city in Italy by population, Turin is the heart of the Metropolitan Area of Turin, which has around 1.7 million inhabitants.

History

Foundation and Roman presence

Turin has a two-thousand-year history, having been founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, an ancient Celtic people. Later, it was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name "Iulia Augusta Taurinorum" in the 1st century BC.

Rulers and capital of state

After the Ostrogothic domination, Turin became the capital of the Duchy of Turin and then, after becoming the capital of the Marquisate of Turin, it passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563, it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. In 1720, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861) (even if only "de facto" until the perfect merger of 1847, when it also became formal), and the first capital (city) of the Kingdom of Italy.

Important events in Turin

Turin has been the site of important international events such as the International Exhibition of Turin in 1911, the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006, the ATP Finals from 2021 (until at least 2025), and in 2022, the city hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

Economy

Turin is the third largest industrial production economy complex in the country, together with Milan and Genoa it composed the industrial triangle in the years of the Italian Economic Miracle. Turin is the hub of the Italian automotive industry, as well as an important center of publishing, banking, insurance, information technology, cinema, food and wine, Space (astronomy) sector, industrial design, sports, fashion, and Artificial Intelligence.

Territory

Turin is located in the plain delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po rivers, opposite the mouth of some alpine valleys: Val di Susa, which connects the city with neighboring France through the Frejus tunnels (Frejus railway tunnel and Frejus road tunnel), Valli di Lanzo, Val Sangone.

Culture and heritage

Moreover, Turin is known worldwide for its culture and artistic heritage. In its territory, there are also areas and buildings included in two UNESCO-protected sites: some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of the Savoy Residences in Piedmont (world heritage) and the area of the Po hills (biosphere reserve).
