Physical geography
The municipality is divided into two main hamlets: Rossiglione Superiore and Rossiglione Inferiore, which develop along the right and left banks of the Stura river. Villafranca, once known as the upper hamlet, remains one kilometer upstream from the lower nucleus. The mountains that surround Rossiglione are Pracaban, Pavaglione, Roccia Nera, Zambra, Colma, Bellavista, Ciazze, Calvo, Valcalda, Saccone, Nero, and Fossa.
History
The history of Rossiglione dates back to the 5th century BC, when human settlements were established along the territorial borders between the municipality and Ovada. Later, the Roman Empire exercised its dominance followed by the control of the Lombards. The first mention of the existence of the municipality is found in a land transfer deed, dated January 8, 1186. The municipality then became the property of the Marchesati of Bosco, who gave it to the Republic of Genoa in 1210. In 1225, the village was acquired by the Del Bosco, and subsequently by the Asinari di Asti. The Malaspina also had jurisdiction over the territory. In the 14th century, the villages of Rossiglione Inferiore and Rossiglione Superiore had achieved almost complete autonomy.
Historical events
In 1625, the men of Rossiglione participated in the War of Succession of Mantua and Montferrat. The town suffered Austrian invasions, which led to the occupation of the town in 1746-47, causing serious clashes between the population and the Austrian army. In 1797-1800, the municipality was the scene of clashes between the French army led by Napoleon Bonaparte and the Austrian and Russian armies during the campaign in Italy.
