Origin of the name

There are several theories about the origin of the name "Rosignano". Some people think it may derive from the name of a person from Roman times, Rasinius, or from the Rasinii family. Others, instead, believe that the toponym is linked to the national name of the Etruscans, Rasenna. However, in 1862, the name "marittimo" was added to the original name to distinguish the municipality from the current Rosignano Monferrato.

History

From the Middle Ages to today

Our village has a history dating back to the medieval era. The Della Gherardesca and the monastery of San Felice di Vada had possessions here. From the tenth century, Rosignano became a Pisan municipality and was known for its hospital. After the death of Countess Matilde di Canossa, the castle passed under the authority of the Pisan bishopric church. The center was then the seat of the Florentine podesteria. In 1776, the municipality became a first-class podesteria.

Development in the 19th and 20th centuries

The municipal territory experienced great development in the nineteenth century with the start of reclamation of the flat areas. In the twentieth century, with the strengthening of communication routes and the affirmation of the industrial sector, the Rosignano Solvay fraction was founded, also part of our municipality.
