An Ancient History Rich in Events

Origins: Medieval Age

The original nucleus of the municipality of Roseto degli Abruzzi is located in the historic center of Montepagano, a village located on a hill overlooking the coast and the surrounding plain. The cultivation of various plants in the territory, mainly roses, gave rise to the hamlet of Rosburgo along the coast.

Modern Age: The 19th and 20th Centuries

During the 19th century, the Roseto degli Abruzzi Station, built in the 1860s, started the development of the inhabited center along the coast. The hamlet, originally called "Le Quote," was named "Rosburgo" in 1887, with the construction of the church of Santa Filomena and the elementary school that followed. In 1927, the name of the municipality was changed to Roseto degli Abruzzi, and the municipal seat was moved from Montepagano.

The Name Change

The change of the municipality's name from Rosburgo to Roseto degli Abruzzi in 1927 was due to the unpopularity of the name Rosburgo among the Italian soldiers during World War I. The name, similar to many German localities, often caused negative reactions among passing soldiers, resulting in insults and boos.
