Cosenza Calcio: History and Curiosities

Cosenza Calcio is an Italian football team based in the city of Cosenza, currently playing in Serie B. Its history dates back to 1912, but it wasn't until 1927 that the team started taking part in the Italian football championship. The team has its own stadium, the San Vito-Gigi Marulla, which can host more than 24,000 spectators.

How it All Began

Football in Cosenza was born in 1908, but the official history of Cosenza Calcio started in 1912, when a sports club called Fortitudo was founded, which had a football section limited to friendly matches. In 1918, some young men founded the Sport Club Italia, but in 1920, Fortitudo returned to the football scene, becoming Cosenza Football Club in 1926 with red and blue colors, in honor of Giuseppe Meazza and Giampiero Combi, protagonists in the fight for the previous year's championship.

The Team's Adventures

Cosenza FBC began to gain recognition against other teams from neighboring regions, but in 1928 it had to transform into Dopolavoro Sportivo Cosenza, with a blue shirt, on the order of the fascist regime. DS Cosenza won the 1927-1928 Third Division Championship, but the lack of organization by the FIGC for the Second Division Championship prevented promotion. In 1929, Cosenza Sport Club was born, with red and blue shirts, but both teams participated in the 1928-1929 Third Division Championship, won by the Fascist Sports Association Cosenza.

In the 1960s, the team began to participate more consistently in Serie B, and from 1964 played its matches at the San Vito-Gigi Marulla stadium. Over the years, Cosenza Calcio has won an IV Serie in 1958, an Anglo-Italian Cup in 1983, a Coppa Italia Lega Pro in 2014-2015, and a National Championship Dante Berretti of Lega Nazionale Professionisti in 1992-93; the latter is considered the team's greatest achievement in history.

The Present

Today, Cosenza Calcio is a team playing in Serie B, continuing to represent Cosenza in the Italian football scene. Its stadium, the San Vito-Gigi Marulla, is a modern structure capable of accommodating many spectators. The team, which has a passionate and constant support from its fans, continues to entertain and excite football enthusiasts.
