Discovering the Municipality of Roscigno

If you're planning a visit to Campania, I recommend not missing out on the Municipality of Roscigno. It's a small village of just 649 inhabitants, located in the province of Salerno. The town is part of the Alburni mountain community, the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, and the Teggiano-Policastro Diocese.

Physical Geography

The historic center of Roscigno Vecchia

The Municipality of Roscigno is divided into two parts: Roscigno Vecchia and Roscigno Nuova. The historic center, Roscigno Vecchia, has been a ghost town for some time due to several landslides. In 2000, Roscigno Vecchia had only one resident, who became a tour guide for the rare visits that occur after the death of the last true resident. It could be a fascinating experience to visit a village with ancient and pristine charm.

History

The name of the town has ancient origins, dating back to the mid-12th century, when it was known as "Russino". This name appears in some writings of the territorial abbey of the Santa Trinità di Cava de' Tirreni in 1086, when the lord of "Corneto" (now Corleto Monforte) donated the church of S. Venere to the abbey of Cava. The small village of Russigno and Ruscigni, as it was then called, appears in many writings of the medieval period. There have been several phases in the life of Roscigno Vecchia, a settlement whose name derives from the geographic location where it is located. The first settlements date back to the year 1000 around a monastery of the Order of Saint Benedict, built about a mile south of the location called "Piano". The inhabitants settled in that area for convenience, to work as shepherds, pig breeders and cattle drivers in Corleto Monforte. Finally, Roscigno became an autonomous municipality in 1515, breaking the chains of the property of the municipality of Corleto Monforte.

Economy

The economy of Roscigno is essentially based on agriculture. In its territory, you can see numerous olive groves and vineyards. The surrounding countryside offers a breathtaking view of the mountains on which it is located. The municipality is relatively small, but soil fertility and natural beauty are its main riches.

Conclusion

If you're looking for an authentic place to spend a few relaxing days, Roscigno might be the place for you. The town, with its history and nature, can offer a unique and unforgettable experience. Spending time in an untouched place like the historic center of Roscigno Vecchia could be a regenerating break from the stress of daily life. Take advantage of this opportunity to discover the beauties of Campania.
