Hydrography

The territory of Rosate is crossed by several artificial canals used for the irrigation of fields. However, except for two, all of these canals derive from the Naviglio Grande, an important transport canal that connects the Ticino River to Milan. Along the western border of the municipality, near Morimondo, flows the Naviglio di Bereguardo.

Rosate does not have large natural lakes or water basins, but there are some sources of drinking water.

History

Origins

The first signs of the settlement of Rosate date back to the Roman era. In fact, a marble fragment dating back to the imperial era was found in the town's territory. Probably dating back to the previous era, the name of the town ends in "-ate", which is typical of places surrounded by woods.

The High Middle Ages

During the High Middle Ages, Rosate was one of the historical capitals of "Burgaria", one of the counties into which the March of Lombardy was divided. In the town, the Avogadri dynasty, descendants of a collateral branch of the powerful family from Besate, moved and built a fortified castle that developed over the following centuries.

The Late Middle Ages

In this period, Rosate fell victim to numerous attacks, and the castle was assaulted mainly by Frederick Barbarossa. To cope with these threats, the Rosate community decided to build new fortifications with wood purchased from the abbey of Morimondo between 1236 and 1265. In 1190, Rosate obtained permission to hold a weekly market.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Rosate is a town that, for its history, location, and natural beauties, definitely deserves a visit. Whether you are a lover of medieval history and fortified castles, or you are looking for a nature excursion to discover the artificial canals that cross the territory, Rosate is a perfect place for you!
