The history of Roppolo

The history of Roppolo has its roots in the initial settlements of Celtic tribes and subsequently Romans who used the hill as a fortress and military outpost. Over the centuries, the ancient fortification was used as the architectural foundation for the current castle, which dominates the hill on which the town is located. The toponym "Roppolo" derives from three hypotheses: from the Latin "ara Apollinis," or from the Germanic "Ropolo," "Roptulo," attested from the year 943, while a third hypothesis would come from the Piedmontese "rocol," which means "fortress" or "fortification". In the tenth century, the entire area was extensively Christianized, thanks to the construction of churches and Christian churches such as the Pieve di San Pietro now in the territory of nearby Cavaglià or the Pieve di San Secondo under the nearby Salussola. Roppolo was also mentioned as a stop on the pilgrimage route of the Via Francigena.
