Rondanina

Rondanina: a small municipality in Liguria

Hello friends, today I will talk about Rondanina, a small municipality in Liguria that has only 60 inhabitants. It is located in the metropolitan city of Genoa and, despite the low population, is a very interesting place to visit.

Physical geography

The territory of Rondanina is located in Val Trebbia at the foothills of the Ligurian Apennines. It is situated between the Cassigheno stream, a tributary of the Trebbia river, and Lake Brugneto east of Genoa. The village is dominated by Mount Rondanina, which reaches a height of 1340 m. The territory is characterized by horizontal layers of limestone rock and some peaks such as Mount Maiada, Mount Fracellana, and Mount Sant'Anna.

Furthermore, Rondanina is part of the Regional Natural Park of Antola, which houses the Museum of Flora and Fauna.

Rondanina: The small town in Liguria between history and nature.

History

The history of Rondanina dates back to when coastal populations migrated inland in search of fertile land to cultivate and a defense against the attacks of the Saracens. The village of Rondanina, which historically was an important center for commercial exchange, was subjugated, starting from the year 1000, to the Malaspina family. Later, the property passed to the Fieschi family that dominated the town and the brand until 1547. It was following the attempted conspiracy of Gianluigi Fieschi towards the power of the Republic of Genoa that the fief passed to the Genoese Doria family and then to the Genoese Republic.

With the French domination of Napoleon Bonaparte, Rondanina returned on December 2, 1797, to the Department of Eastern Ligurian Mountains, within the Ligurian Republic. After the new French regulations, from the end of the 18th century to 1814, Rondanina became the capital of the VIII canton of the jurisdiction of Eastern Ligurian Mountains. In 1805 it was included in the department of Genoa within the jurisdiction of Bobbio.

With the Congress of Vienna in 1814, Rondanina was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia and subsequently into the Kingdom of Italy, from 1861. From 1859 to 1923, the territory was included in the Bobbio district of the province of Pavia and then passed to the then province of Genoa.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Rondanina can boast a long history and a privileged geographical position, surrounded by nature and the Regional Natural Park of Antola. This small municipality in Liguria is definitely an interesting place to visit for those passionate about history, nature, and culture. If you are looking for an unusual destination off the beaten path, Rondanina is definitely the place for you!
