Ronchi Valsugana: history, tradition and nature in Trentino.

The history of Ronchi Valsugana

The Celtic origin of the name

Like many other places in Central Europe, the origin of the name Ronchi is of Celtic origin. The term Ronk would mean field in Celtic language and has evolved over the centuries in various forms such as Ronkis, Roncus, Montis Roncorum, and finally Ronchi.

The Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, the area of Ronchi Valsugana was under the dominion of the Lords of Telve, but thanks to the influence of the Prince-Bishop of Trento Friedrich von Wangen and Emperor Otto IV, the area was colonized by farmers and roncadori from Feltrino, Bellunese and even Germany. Thus, the settlement of Ronchi was formed, which took its name from the Latinized Celtic term Roncus.

In 1412, the farms of Ronchi passed from the dominion of the da Carrara family to that of the Counts of Tyrol. In the following centuries, the Lords of Castellalto promoted a second colonization of the mountain, this time by Bavarian-Tyrolese roncadori and miners.

Modern and contemporary age

A document from 1569 states that most of the inhabitants of Ronchi Valsugana did not know Italian and that German-speaking curators of souls were sent to administer the area. Over the centuries, Ronchi Valsugana has undergone numerous cultural and historical influences, yet it has always remained a place full of life and traditions.
