History

Origins

Ronchi dei Legionari was already a pre-Roman settlement, as evidenced by the necropolis next to the airport, but it was above all an important transit point on the Gemina Roman road and a strategic base for the defense of the Aquileia hinterland. For this reason, Ronchi was subject to the incursions of various enemy populations, such as the Hungarians in the 10th century and the Turks in the 15th century.

Medieval and modern period

From AD 967 until 1420, Ronchi dei Legionari was under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, while during the 16th and 17th centuries it was the scene of harsh battles between the Republic of Venice and the Habsburgs. In 1615, the Gradisca War led to the burning of Selz and Ronchi. After a brief period of French occupation, in 1815 the municipality became part of the possessions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and then of Italy since 1918.
