Roncà

Roncà: a natural park among vineyards

Hello friends, today I bring you to discover Roncà, a beautiful municipality with 3753 inhabitants located in the province of Verona, immersed in the area of the Lessinia Park and part of the "wine cities" association.

Physical geography

Roncà is located about 36 kilometers from Verona and borders the province of Vicenza. The latter is also part of its diocese.

Roncà: a municipality within the vineyards of the Lessinia Park.

Etymology

The name of the town seems to derive from the Latin word "runcare", which means "to clear", since in ancient settlements uncultivated lands were cultivated.

History

Roncà has a long history, evidenced by the finding of prehistoric tools on Mount Calvarina and a Roman sarcophagus tomb cover. In the Middle Ages, the town was affected by various historical events, until the arrival of the Serenissima, which reclaimed the land, canalized the watercourses and allowed the cultivation of different crops, including the aromatic Durella grapes.

Monuments and places of interest

The municipality surprises with its architectural heritage, including numerous churches, including the oldest one, the Church of Santa Margherita, dating back to the 14th century, and then the parish church of Terrossa dedicated to Mary Magdalene, the parish church of Brenton dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, and the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata dedicated to the mother of Jesus, all dating back to the 19th century. Also worth visiting are numerous rural villas including La Pastoria, Corte Cavaggioni, Villa Pompei and Villa Meneguzzi.

Society

The municipality has had a steady population growth in recent years, with a community based on religious rituals and local festivities, including the feast of the patron, San Bartolomeo, at the end of August.

Culture

Roncà also has a strong naturalistic vocation, so much so as to host the Museum of Fossils, where the specimens found on Mount Duello and collected in the "Roncà Layers" fossil cell are preserved, an exciting journey that allows us to relive those remote past epochs.

In summary, Roncà is a small but charming municipality, with lush nature and a rich and ancient cultural heritage. A must-visit stop, perhaps on the occasion of the numerous local festivals and events. Enjoy your visit!
