The physical geography of Romagnano Sesia

Romagnano Sesia: history, wine, and scenic beauties.

Territory

Romagnano Sesia is located about 30 km northwest of Novara and 40 km from Vercelli, Biella and Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. The Sesia River marks the western border of the municipality, separating it from the province of Vercelli.

Climate

The climate of Romagnano Sesia is temperate and humid, with rainfall in all seasons and particularly hot summer temperatures. Precipitation is more frequent from March to May and returns with greater intensity between October and November. Snow is present in winter.

The origin of the name of Romagnano Sesia

The name of the municipality derives from the Latin term ''fundus Romanianus'', meaning a rustic estate belonging to the noble Romanii family. Until the unification of Italy, the name of the municipality was simply Romagnano, but later Sesia was added to distinguish it from another town with the same name in the province of Salerno.

The history of Romagnano Sesia

The first historical document referring to the town dates back to 882, when Romagnano Sesia was donated by Charles the Fat to the Diocese of Vercelli. In 1198 it was granted the title of Borgo by the Municipality of Novara and shortly after a castle was built. That construction was destroyed by French troops in 1477, but the Palazzo della Ragione, with its rectangular tower, has been partly preserved.

The attractions of Romagnano Sesia

If you are in Romagnano Sesia, I recommend visiting the Cantina dei Santi, which houses frescoes dating back to the fifteenth century. Also, if you are passionate about wine, you should not miss the production of DOCG Ghemme and DOC Colline Novaresi. Finally, the Giuseppe Bonfantini Institute of higher education in agriculture is a center of excellence.

Conclusions

In summary, Romagnano Sesia is a municipality in the province of Novara with an ancient Roman history. With its production of DOCG and DOC wines, the Giuseppe Bonfantini Institute of higher education in agriculture, and its historical attractions, Romagnano Sesia is a must-visit location if you are in Piedmont.
