Curiosities about the name of Romagnano al Monte

The name Romagnano al Monte derives from Latin and, in Roman times, was part of a rural estate belonging to the patrician family of Romanius. Until the unification of Italy, the Municipality was simply called Romagnano. After the unification of Italy, the name al Monte was added to distinguish it from another city called Romagnano Sesia, located in the province of Novara.

The history of the city

Romagnano al Monte is a historic center perched on a ridge overlooking the gorges of the Platano river. In Roman times, it was under the jurisdiction of the ancient Volcei, now Buccino. The territory preserves traces of a opus signinum pavement in the vicinity of an ancient Roman villa in the San Pietro locality and other scattered remains.

In the Middle Ages, a substantial nucleus of inhabitants settled where the historic center of the old settlement now stands. The castle was built around the first millennium, and not far away, to the east, the first parish church was also built, initially dedicated to the Madonna del Parto and then to the Assumption. The ruins of these two historical monuments are still visible.

In the second half of the seventeenth century, the parish was transferred to the new church dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario and was rebuilt a century later. However, the church was abandoned due to the earthquake of November 23, 1980. It was then rebuilt from the ground up in the new location of Ariola.
