Rome is the Capital of Italy, the seat of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital and the Lazio region. With over 2.7 million inhabitants and an area of nearly 1,300 square kilometers, it is Italy's most populous city and the third most populous city in the European Union, after Berlin and Madrid. Moreover, it is the fifth-largest city in Europe, after Moscow, Istanbul, London, and St. Petersburg.

According to tradition, Rome was founded on April 21, 753 BC by Romulus. It was the first metropolis of the Western world and the beating heart of Roman civilization, a major influence on human society, European culture, the Latin language, literature, Western art, architecture, urban planning, philosophy, religion, law, and customs of subsequent centuries. The city was also the capital of the Roman Empire, the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1946, and is now the capital of Italy.

The historic center of Rome, delimited by the ancient Aurelian walls, is a historical, artistic, and cultural heritage of the Western world. In 2007, the Colosseum was included among the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The Vatican City

Rome also hosts the enclave of Vatican City, the only state in the world located within a city. Being the seat of the Pope and the cradle of the Catholic Church, Rome is at the heart of the Christian religion.

Rome also hosts the headquarters of several international organizations. The city was the place of founding of the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community. Moreover, it hosts the headquarters of three United Nations organizations: FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Food Programme (WFP).
