Hello friends! Today I will talk to you about Turin, one of the most important cities in Italy. Located in Piedmont, Turin is the capital of the region and the Metropolitan City of Turin. With a population of 842,472 inhabitants as of October 31, 2022, it is the fourth-largest city in Italy by population. But it's not just that, Turin is also the heart of a metropolitan area with around 1.7 million inhabitants and the third-largest economic-industrial production complex in the country, after Milan and Genoa. Furthermore, it represents one of the main hubs for university, art, tourism, science, and culture in Italy.
The history of Turin
Turin has a two-thousand-year history. It was probably founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini and transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogoth rule, it became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, and then passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563, it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy, and from 1720 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia. In the 19th century, the Kingdom of Sardinia led to the Risorgimento and made Turin the capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1946.
Culture and tourist attractions
Turin is a city that hosts many areas and buildings included in two UNESCO protected sites: some palaces and areas that are part of the circuit of the Savoy Residences in Piedmont (World Heritage Site) and the Po Hills area (Biosphere Reserve). The city is the backdrop to numerous cultural and tourist events. In 2006, it hosted the XX Winter Olympic Games, and in 2022 the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. But the city's tourist attractions don't end there. Turin is in fact the birthplace of some of the greatest symbols of "Made in Italy" in the world, such as vermouth, Gianduiotto chocolate, breadsticks, and espresso coffee.
Economy and industry
Even from an economic point of view, Turin has a lot to offer. The city is the hub of the Italian automotive industry and an important center for publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, food and wine, the space industry, industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence. Its constant growth in international importance has made Turin a global city in the "Gamma" category.
Physical geography
From a geographical point of view, Turin is located in the plain delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po rivers. It is facing the mouth of some alpine valleys: Val di Susa, Lanzo Valleys, and Sangone Valley. The Po River traverses the city from south to north and is one of its most iconic symbols. Turin is surrounded by hills that give a romantic and suggestive atmosphere to the city.
In conclusion, Turin is a very interesting and multifaceted city, capable of satisfying the needs of anyone who visits it. With its millennial history, its culture, its tourist attractions, and its active presence in the Italian industry, it is a city that never stops surprising and evolving.
