Roghudi

Welcome to Roghudi: a Calabrian municipality divided in two

Hello everyone! Today, I will talk about the municipality of Roghudi, a small town located in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria, in Calabria. The peculiar aspect of this municipality is that it is divided into two non-contiguous portions placed at a great distance from each other (about ).

Roghudi: between wind, crevices and Greek-Calabrian dialect

The name Roghudi may derive from the Amharic "ruha" (breath, wind) followed by a suffix indicating a locality ("-adi"), describing a very windy place as it actually is. However, belonging to Bovesìa, the name could more likely derive from the Greek "rhogodes" ("full of crevices") or from "rhekhodes" ("rough"). The part of Roghudi Vecchio, inhabited since 1050 and part of a Greek-Calabrian dialect, was declared totally unusable after the two strong floods occurred in October 1971 and January 1973. The population of Roghudi was distributed in neighboring countries and, after eighteen years, in 1988, the new Roghudi was born near the Ionian Sea coast on the western outskirts of Melito di Porto Salvo.

Coats of arms and schools of Roghudi

The coat of arms and the banner of the Municipality of Roghudi were granted with the decree of the President of the Republic on May 17, 1986. The municipality hosts a branch of the "Corrado Alvaro" comprehensive institute of Melito di Porto Salvo.

Demographics and foreign minorities

According to ISTAT data as of December 31, 2015, the resident foreign population was 154 people. The nationalities most represented in terms of their percentage of the total resident population were Morocco, India and Romania.

Economy, infrastructure and transportation

There is no specific data regarding the economy of Roghudi. With regard to infrastructure, there is a provincial road that connects Roghudi to Melito di Porto Salvo and to SP4bis Porto Salvo-Brognaturo-Limbadi. There are no direct bus lines to Roghudi, but it is possible to reach the town via bus lines that connect Melito di Porto Salvo to the Villa San Giovanni railway station.

The municipal administration

Municipal elections resumed in Roghudi in 1946. Until 1993, the Mayor was appointed by the municipal council among its members. With the introduction of the Italian electoral system, the Mayor is directly elected, becoming a five-year election starting from 2001. Currently, the Mayor of Roghudi is an independent named Pierpaolo Zavettieri.

Conclusions

Here is a brief summary of the municipality of Roghudi, a small town divided between Aspromonte and the Ionian coast. Despite the difficulties of the past, the community of Roghudi managed to rebuild its future in a new location, but keeping its heart always turned to its history and tradition.
