Rodì Milici: a hill town in Sicily

Hello everyone, today I will talk about Rodì Milici, an Italian town located in the metropolitan city of Messina, in Sicily. The town consists of the urban center of Rodì (the town hall), Pagina 156, Abate Francesco Sacco, and Milici, in addition to the small hamlets of Pietre Rosse and Case Bruciate.

Physical geography

Territory

Rodì Milici extends over an entirely hilly territory, in the valley of the Patrì (or Termini) stream, which forms the natural and administrative border with Castroreale to the east. The town is located at the western end of the Peloritani mountains, near the contiguous chain of the Nebrodi Mountains. To the west, however, the town is delimited by the Mazzarà stream.

Religious architecture

Among the religious monuments stand out the churches of Saints Rocco and Biagio, San Filippo, dell'Immacolata, San Bartolomeo and San Giovanni, while the Palazzo dell'Ordine dei Gerosolimitani or dei Cavalieri di Malta is now the seat of the Museum of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

Civil architecture

The Milici drinking fountain, decorated with the insignia of the Order of Malta, is another example of civil architecture.

Archaeological sites

Finally, among the archaeological sites, there are the remains of Longane and its necropolis, the Roman farm, the Greek necropolis of Mustaca, the Pirgo sanctuary, and the pink dome.

The population of Rodì Milici is constantly decreasing, from more than 6,000 inhabitants in the 1950s to about 2,500 current inhabitants.

In addition to Italian, the Sicilian language is spoken in its Messina variant, thanks to the central position of the island of Sicily in the Mediterranean.
