Rodero

Discovering the Municipality of Rodero

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about Rodero, a municipality in the province of Como in Lombardy. With its 1278 inhabitants, this town is located 400 meters above sea level, in the Lombard Prealps, bordering the province of Varese and just a few kilometers from the Swiss border.

Some geography

Rodero is located in a dominant position over the Gaggiolo Valley, the Stabio plain and the Riviera dei Giaghi Valley. The municipality is divided into two hamlets: Rodero Casello Ferroviario and Rodero Confine. Rodero belongs to the so-called Regio Insubrica and is classified as a zone 4 with low seismic hazard and zone E from a climatic point of view.

The origin of the name

The name Rodero could derive from the root "rod", like Rho, meaning "bank, channeled torrent", or from the root "ròha" meaning "height, high place". In the 12th century, the name of the city was Rodeira.

The history of Rodero

Documented in the Uggiate parish in 1335, the municipality obtained redemption from the feudal system in 1668, a ransom that the municipality was required to pay to the coffers of the Duchy of Milan through a fifteen-yearly payment still active in 1751. In 1757, Rodero became part of the civil territory of the city of Como, and during the Risorgimento, the inhabitants of Rodero helped some Garibaldini to escape to Switzerland.

The symbols of Rodero

The coat of arms of Rodero is composed of a field divided into two parts: in the first, in blue, there is an oak tree and in the second, in silver, you can see a palm tree, both surmounted by a crown and surrounded by oak branches. The banner is made up of a blue drapery with a white cross, and above it the coat of arms with curved sides.

The patronal feast

The patron saints of Rodero are SS. Simon and Jude and the patronal feast is on October 28th.

Places of interest

The parish church of Rodero, dedicated to the apostles Simon and Jude, is a rarity of proto-Romanesque architecture and has a plant with two side aisles. It is located in a central position in relation to the village and is a religious reference point for the inhabitants of Rodero.

Rodero is a small municipality, but full of culture and traditions, where nature and history merge to create a welcoming and evocative environment. Have you ever visited Rodero?
