Welcome to the Province of Campobasso: A Friendly Introduction
Hello everyone! Today I'll be talking to you about the Province of Campobasso, a beautiful province located in the Molise region of Italy. It covers an area of 2,909 square kilometers and includes 84 municipalities. The capital of this wonderful province is Campobasso, with its institutional headquarters located in Palazzo Magno.
The province faces the Adriatic Sea, bordered to the north by the province of Chieti (Abruzzo), to the southeast by the province of Foggia (Puglia), to the south by the provinces of Benevento and Caserta (Campania), and to the west by the province of Isernia.
So, are you ready to discover all the secrets of the Molise territory? Let's get started!
Physical Geography
As Francesco Jovine expressed in his poetry, the province of Campobasso is known for the beauty of its mountains, lakes, and rivers. The territory is very diverse, ranging from the mountains of the Sannio Apennines, to the hills, to the rivers and lakes of the hinterland, and finally reaching the coastal area of the Adriatic, passing through towns, villages, and cities.
But that's not all: the territory is crossed by the valleys of Trigno, Biferno, and Fortore: they have a generally straight course, surrounded by the slopes of hills and mountains, and widen considerably near the sea. In short, nature is still very well preserved here.
Hydrography
Speaking of hydrography, the province of Campobasso is really rich. In particular, it is crossed by several rivers: Biferno, Fortore, Trigno, Tammaro, Saccione, Sinarca, and Sassinora. Biferno is the longest river in the province and, thanks to a dam for electricity production, forms the Guardialfiera Lake, crossed by the State Road 647 of Fondo Valle del Biferno, which offers breathtaking scenery. Fortore, on the other hand, marks the border between Molise and Puglia: it is interesting to note that it also crosses Lake Occhito. Tammaro, Saccione, Sinarca, and Sassinora are smaller rivers, but no less fascinating than those already mentioned.
Lakes
The province of Campobasso also boasts two artificial lakes: Guardialfiera Lake and Liscione Lake. The latter takes its name from the dam that created it and can boast of two truly suggestive viaducts: "Molise I" and "Molise II", which cross the lake for 8.5 kilometers.
Conclusion
It has been a pleasure telling you something about the province of Campobasso, one of the most beautiful in Italy and probably the world. With its mountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes, it is a true paradise for nature and landscape lovers. So, if you are looking for a place to relax and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature, the province of Campobasso is the perfect place for you.
