Roccavione Station: a railway stop in Val Vermenagna

Roccavione Station is an important location for travelers in Val Vermenagna, Cuneo Province. This railway stop was built in 1887 and is classified as a "bronze" category by its operator, RFI. In the past, the station was a priority stop and had multiple tracks, but over the years it has been downgraded to an unstaffed stop and some tracks have been removed.

The multifunctional redevelopment of the station

In April 2019, as part of the cross-border policies of the Integrated Territorial Plan (PITer) ALPIMED (Alpimed "Mobile") and the implementation of EuroVelo 8, it was decided to plan a multifunctional redevelopment of Roccavione Station. This structure will become an intermodal hub for transporting bicycles and trains. Additionally, it will be enhanced from a tourist and environmental perspective as it is part of the Cuneo-Limone-Ventimiglia railway.

This project will allow train passengers to bring their own bicycles and embark on excursions in the valley, enjoying breathtaking panoramas and untouched nature. Furthermore, the station will become a rest and welcome point for cyclists, where they can rest and refuel with water and energy foods.

The valorization of the territory

Enhancing Roccavione Station is part of a larger project aimed at valorizing the territory of Val Vermenagna. This project aims to create a network of cycling routes linking the main tourist destinations of the valley. EuroVelo 8, for example, is one of the international cycling routes that crosses the valley, connecting Spain to Greece through Italy.

Enhancing the Cuneo-Limone-Ventimiglia Railway is another important aspect of the territory valorization project. This railway is also known as the "Line of the Maritime Alps" and is one of the most scenic railways in Italy. It crosses the valley of Roccavione, offering breathtaking views of the mountains and natural landscapes of the valley.

Conclusions

Roccavione Station is an important railway stop for all those who travel in Val Vermenagna. The multifunctional redevelopment project of the station will enhance this location and create a new welcome point for cyclists and tourists. Additionally, enhancing the Cuneo-Limone-Ventimiglia Railway will promote tourism and economic development in the valley, offering everyone the opportunity to discover the natural and cultural beauty of this region.
