If you are fond of medieval villages and happen to be in the Frosinone area, you cannot miss Caprile, a small hamlet of Roccasecca. Despite having only 83 inhabitants, this charming village is a hidden gem among the hills of central Italy. We present a brief summary of its history, geography, monuments and infrastructure.
History
Caprile is a village dating back to the 15th century, but its origins date back to the 10th century, when the Hermitage of San Michele, or Sant'Angelo in Asprano, was built. In 1607, Caprile saw the birth of Domenico Colessa, better known as "Papone," who became a famous brigand of the Basso Lazio in the 17th century. During World War II, the village suffered damage caused both by Allied bombings and by the devastation of the Waffen-SS troops.
Geography
Caprile is located on a hill about 250 meters above sea level, very close to the plain of the Melfa river and the Liri Valley. At its feet, there is Mount Asprano, while on the other side, you can reach the village of Colle San Magno. To reach Caprile, you have to drive about 2 km from the nearby Roccasecca or Castrocielo.
Monuments and places of interest
