Roccamandolfi
Welcome to Roccamandolfi!
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Roccamandolfi, a municipality in the province of Isernia, in Molise. Despite being a small town with only 846 inhabitants, it has many interesting things to offer!
Physical geography
Territory
Roccamandolfi is located in the extreme southeast of the province of Isernia, bordering the province of Campobasso and three municipalities in the province of Caserta: San Gregorio Matese to the southeast, Letino to the south, and Gallo Matese to the west-southwest. The highest mountain (2050 m.a.s.l.) of the Matese Massif is located in its territory: Monte Miletto.
Climate
The climate in Roccamandolfi is rather dry, but the air is kept cool even during the summer. It is no longer as cold as in the past, but the summer temperature reaches and exceeds 35 degrees every year!
Origins of the name
The name "Roccamandolfi" has Lombard origins and initially meant "Rocca di Maginulfo", belonging to the royal family. Over time, the name underwent linguistic corruption and became what we know today.
History
From the Middle Ages to the 1700s
The history of Roccamandolfi has very ancient roots. During the Middle Ages, the town was part of the County of Bojano under the Lombards. Subsequently, with the arrival of the Normans, it was annexed to the County of Molise.
The Castellano of Roccamandolfi was Count Carlo Pannone, who later became Pandone. During its rich feudal history, the castle was besieged many times by imperial troops and destroyed on the orders of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. However, the village resisted and was rebuilt downstream, in its current position.
After these events, the castle and the village lost all strategic value and were sold by the various nobles of the city of Naples. It was then granted to various feudal lords, including the Roccafoglia, the Gaetani, the Cennamo, and the Perez. The latter were the owners until 1543, when Francesco Perez sold it to Baron Giovanni Luigi Rizzo.
What to see in Roccamandolfi
In this wonderful little town there are numerous things to see. The first mandatory stop is the castle, rebuilt after its destruction in 1223. Its majesty will leave you ecstatic! In addition, you could visit the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, dating back to the seventeenth century. The church has been renovated several times throughout its history due to the destruction caused by natural events such as earthquakes and landslides.
Another interesting stop is Palazzo Falcone, which seems to have been built at the end of the sixteenth century. It has since been renovated numerous times, but it is still possible to admire the beauty and elegance of the palace.
Finally, for nature lovers, there is the Matese National Park, with its breathtaking mountain landscapes, where you can walk and relax, or practice trekking and hiking.
Cuisine
Of course, if you visit Roccamandolfi, you can also enjoy the delicious local cuisine. In particular, I recommend looking for the precious black truffle and the famous "sagne e fagioli"!
