Origins of the name

There are several hypotheses about the origin of the name "Roccabernarda". One of these might have to do with Bernardo del Carpio, a legendary hero who lived in Spain in the 9th century, who, after conquering the town, would have built walls and a fortification. The town was once called "Rocca i Tacina.”

History

Roccabernarda has been a historically rich city, although there is completely unexplored archaeological documentation. The historic center features the ruins of a castle that has not been studied archaeologically, of which only the underground remains, and not far from the town are the remains of the Convent of San Francesco di Paola, founded by Giovanni Cadurio after returning from the Court of the King of France, Louis XI, where he accompanied Saint Francis of Paola. Archaeological finds have been casual and sporadic. Some artificial caves, called "di Vitale", located along the Tacina river, are hypothesized to be the hermitage where San Vitale di Castronovo (10th century) spent two years, returning from a pilgrimage to Rome.

Monuments and places of interest

If you are passionate about history, do not miss the opportunity to visit the monuments of Roccabernarda. One of the most interesting points is the Convent of San Francesco di Paola, dating back to the 15th century. This convent, considered the city's religious center, was a retreat for many monks in the past. Furthermore, a few kilometers from the center is the archaeological site of Serrarossa, an ancient complex of Roman and early medieval times along the Tacina valley.

Demographic evolution

The city currently has 3127 inhabitants, a number that has remained fairly stable over the years.

Festivals

Roccabernarda is famous for its popular festivals. The patron saint of the town, San Francesco di Paola, is celebrated over several days around the last Sunday in May. During the festival, there are processions, fireworks, and popular songs recited by the faithful. It is tradition to hire a nationally renowned singer for the final day of the festival. The center is also home to the "Mulerà Fair", which is held on September 1st.

The Mulerà Fair, once the largest fair in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, was an important commercial celebration that attracted visitors from everywhere. The elderly still remember the period of preparation for this event, when the town was frequented by many communities of "gypsies" who sold handmade goods door-to-door.
