History

The name Tufara Valle derives from the mineral Tufo, which is abundant in the area. In ancient times it was called Tofara, and it became important thanks to the construction of the Via Appia, which made it a commercial crossing point between Rome and Brindisi.

The village was the scene of numerous clashes and battles, from the earliest times until at least 1306, when firearms were invented. The fortress of Apollosa was the price paid in blood by Corradino, while Tufara was one of the most important places for battles between the House of Anjou and the House of Aragon.

Over the years, the village became increasingly important from a commercial and tourist point of view, earning the nickname "Berlin of the South".
