Roccabascerana: history and community in the province of Avellino.

History

Roccabascerana has an ancient history that dates back to the Middle Ages. It was known as "Quascierana" and later as "Rocca de Guasserana". The toponym comes from the Germanic term "gwass", which means "vassal".

During the Hohenstaufen period, Roccabascerana belonged to the Norman Giovanni Moscabruno, captain of King Manfred of Sicily. With the settlement of Charles I of Anjou, the land of Roccabascerana was granted to Ruggiero di Burson, a French knight, and in 1271 to his son Riccardo di Burson.

During the reign of Queen Joanna, the feud passed to the Della Marra, who were stripped of it in 1464 by King Ferrante I of Aragon following the rebellion of Antonio della Marra. In 1467, the feud passed to the Sperone; in 1482 to the Dentice; in 1484 to the Brancaccio; in 1486 to the Spinelli who held it until 1560 when it passed to the D'Aquino (family).

In 1669, the feud came into the possession of the Capece (family) who sold it to the Della Leonessa (family), princes of Sepino and Dukes of San Martino Valle Caudina. The latter held it until the end of feudalism in 1806.

Sport

The inhabitants of Roccabascerana are passionate about football. A.S.D. US Roccabascerana plays in the provincial championship of Third Category of Avellino.

The team was founded on September 21, 1985 by the local youth. The company has always represented a bulwark for the young people of Roccabascerana and the neighboring villages. For the first two years, since there was no sports facility in Roccabascerana, the team played on the field of Rotondi (AV). In 1987, they inaugurated their own sports facility, then called "San Giorgio", later renamed "Massimo Pirone". The team still plays their home games in this stadium today.

In 1991, US Roccabascerana won the Third Category championship, thus accessing the Regional Championship of Second Category. The company then formed a second team, Silvestri Linea Ceramica, playing in Second Category, in order to allow the boys to grow and have fun in a federal championship.

In the 2013/2014 sports season, U.S. Roccabascerana played a great championship, reaching the playoff final against Real Pietrastornina.

In conclusion, Roccabascerana is a Municipality with a fascinating history and a warm and welcoming community. We invite you to discover all its treasures.
