History

The town has a long history dating back to 1085 when the castle was built by Sinibaldo Sinibaldi, son of Teodino Berardi, who gave it its name. The castle was then rebuilt as a fortress by the architect Baldassarre Peruzzi at the behest of Cardinal Alessandro Cesarini in the sixteenth century. Over the years, the castle has changed several owners, including the Mattei, Lante della Rovere, Muti Bussi and Lepri families. In the fifties, the castle was purchased by the American writer Caresse Crosby, who used it as a meeting place for artists.

Monuments and Places of Interest

The Cesarini Castle is one of the main monuments of Rocca Sinibalda. Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the interiors were enriched with frescoes. In 1980, the Italian Post Office dedicated a 550 Italian Lira stamp to the castle, as part of the collection known as "Castelli d'Italia". The entire castle has been restored and reopened in April 2014.

The Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Nature Reserve is a protected area of extraordinary beauty, which includes two mountains that reach a maximum altitude of 1,501 meters above sea level. This protected area is ideal for nature lovers and outdoor walks.

Society

The population of Rocca Sinibalda has undergone many variations over the years due to emigration to other Italian locations and abroad.

Infrastructure and Transport

The municipality is connected to Rieti by the Provincial Road 30-39. In addition, from Rocca Sinibalda it is possible to access the Via Turanense, which connects the town to the Via Salaria national road, which leads to Rome and other nearby cities. Unfortunately, the municipality is not served by any railway line.

Administration

From the administrative point of view, Rocca Sinibalda passed from the province of Perugia in Umbria to the province of Rome in Lazio. Today the mayor is Marino Piergentili, who was elected in the first round in 2019.
