Rocca Pietore

Rocca Piétore: a jewel in the Dolomites

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a Municipality that I recently discovered and that immediately became one of my favorite places in the Dolomites: Rocca Piétore. I will guide you to discover this beautiful village, telling you about its characteristics and history.

Physical geography

Rocca Piétore is a Municipality of 1152 inhabitants located in the high province of Belluno, in the center of the Dolomites. The territory extends over an area of about 75 km² and includes the Val Pettorina, the hamlet of Laste, the hamlet of Calloneghe with Santa Maria delle Grazie, and the Alleghe lake.

The landscape is dominated by the Dolomite peaks, including the Marmolada and the Civetta. The Pettorina stream crosses the valley adding another fascinating feature to the already magical view of the valley. Rocca is also famous for its hamlet of Sottoguda, a singular natural canyon that seems to protect the old village.

History

The history of the municipality has ancient roots that date back to the Longobard era. The territory was initially an arimannia set up to defend the Rocca Bruna, a fortified settlement. Over the centuries, Rocca Pietore came under the control of the city of Belluno, maintaining, however, a strong administrative autonomy. This autonomy was formalized in 1417 with the Statutes of the Magnificent Community of Rocca.

For 411 years, Rocca Pietore lived as a small republic, governed by democratically elected family heads. Under its jurisdiction fell also the upper Val di Fassa, Livinallongo, and part of the upper Val Badia, and even a tribunal based in Saviner. The republic enjoyed tax exemption and exemption from military service, and could also carry out commercial exchanges with neighboring Tyrolean territories. It was only in 1798 that Rocca Pietore became part of the Venetian Republic and then of the Kingdom of Italy.

Art and culture

Rocca Pietore is a locality rich in history and traditions. The parish church, dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, dates back to the seventeenth century and has recently been restored. Here you can admire works of art of great value, including the bust of San Giovanni Battista, a golden wooden statue of the 1800s.

One of the most interesting places in Rocca Piétore is Sottoguda, a hamlet that stands out for its architectural heritage and natural beauty. The town center is a real gem: stone houses with portals with rounded arches and special horizontal windows, all framed by majestic rock walls.

Food and drink

The cuisine of Rocca Piétore is based on local products, including rye bread, alpine cheese, and game. The typical dish of the municipality is the "torta de fregoloti", a cake made with corn and rye flour, with pine nuts, raisins, and a pinch of plum liqueur.

As for drinks, we cannot fail to mention the vin brulé, a typical winter drink made from red wine, sugar, spices, and citrus peel.

Outdoor activities

Rocca Piétore is a real paradise for nature lovers and outdoor activities. Among the most famous excursions is the one that leads to the Marmolada, the queen of the Dolomites, where you can admire a breathtaking panorama. In winter, the Civetta ski area offers many slopes for all levels, with views of Mount Pelmo and the Marmolada.

But not only that: Rocca Pietore is also the ideal destination for those who love trekking, walking in nature, climbing, and mountain biking. And if you want to relax after a day in the open air, you can take a dip in the hot springs of Rocca, already known in ancient Roman times.

Events

The life of Rocca Pietore is dotted with events, festivals, and fairs that celebrate the culture and traditions of the territory. Among the most important ones are the Fira de San Grato, held in October, the Sagra del formaggio d’Alpeggio, in August, and the Festa de Soteguda, in September.

Conclusion

Rocca Piétore is truly a jewel of the Dolomites, a Municipality that has managed to preserve its beauty and its history intact. If you want to discover an enchanted place surrounded by mountains and pristine nature, Rocca Piétore is the place for you. Come and discover it, you won't regret it!
