If you're looking for a perfect destination to spend your summer holidays, the province of Crotone might be just what you need! With its 160,638 inhabitants spread across ## municipalities, this area of Calabria is a true Italian gem overlooking the Ionian Sea.
History
The desire to separate from the province of Catanzaro and create a new province with Crotone as its capital was first expressed in 1957. Since then, the request has been made several times, first by a group of fifty mayors and then, in 1992, by twenty-seven mayors who finally obtained approval.
Crotone, in particular, is rich in Magna Graecia history and tradition, but in the 1920s it also became the first industrial center in Calabria specializing in the chemical industry. However, due to environmental pollution, industrial production has been downsized and the province has closed those factories.
Symbols
The provincial coat of arms of the province of Crotone is characterized by a stylized representation of the city, with a cylindrical tower on the right and a round castle on the left, both colored in red, white, and green.
Physical geography
The province's territory extends from the Sila Mountains to the Ionian Sea. Le Castella and Punta Alice are the main tourist destinations in the province, while the villages of Trepidò and Villaggio Pino Grande are popular among tourists looking for a mountain holiday. The Arbëreshë community
In the province of Crotone, there is a small community of Albanian origin speaking the Arbëreshë language, located mainly in the municipalities of Pallagorio, San Nicola dell'Alto, and Carfizzi. Their language is allowed in public places, as it has the same validity as the Italian language.
