Rocca d'Arazzo

Exploring the History of Rocca d'Arazzo

If you're looking for a peaceful place steeped in Italian history, Rocca d'Arazzo might be the perfect destination for you. This small town located in Piedmont has only 901 inhabitants, but boasts a very interesting history.

Rocca d'Arazzo in the Past

The city, which in the past was known as Rupes, then Rocca San Genesio and Rocca Ayraci, was for centuries a fiefdom belonging to the Diocese of Asti. In 1198, Bishop Bonifacio I decided to cede the fiefdom to the Astese Republic, which had pressured him to do so, because the bishop was not able to defend the stronghold on the road to the capital.

However, the Archbishop of Milan and the Pope did not approve the transfer, which was considered arbitrary and annulled. Even the citizens of Rocca were not happy to come under the rule of the city of Asti, as they feared that the city wanted to turn their town into a military fortress.

There were three years of conflicts between the two sides, until a truce was signed in 1202 that obliged the citizens of Rocca to accept Asti's rule. However, the people of Rocca did not accept this decision well and turned to the Bishop of Asti.

The matter was referred to the Court of Rome and, in 1221, a verdict was pronounced that established that the fiefdom would remain with the Church of Asti, but the city could use it as a stronghold in the defense of its territory.

The Cacherano family, a noble family of the XIII century, received the lordly rights in vicariate and created an economic and matrimonial Hospicium, allying themselves with the families De Rocca and De Arazzo. In 1305 the castle was besieged by the Prince of Acaja and destroyed, but it was rebuilt by the Asti people.

Rocca d'Arazzo: history and relaxation in the heart of Piedmont

The Castle of Rocca d'Arazzo

In 1379 the Bishop of Asti granted the castle of Rocca d'Arazzo directly to the Duke of Milan, opening the way for his definitive conquest. In the Codex Astensis, probably written a few years later, the castle of Rocca d'Arazzo is depicted with the Visconti Biscione instead of the flag of Asti.

Rocca d'Arazzo Today

Today Rocca d'Arazzo is a small town in the province of Asti, located in a panoramic area of Piedmont. If you're passionate about history, you can't miss a visit to the castle and other attractions of the city.

If you're looking for a way to relax and unwind from the routine, Rocca d'Arazzo is the ideal place. You can take a stroll along its quiet streets and admire the breathtaking panorama of the surrounding countryside. Moreover, local restaurants offer delicious Piedmontese dishes, including the renowned Barolo and white truffle.

In short, Rocca d'Arazzo is a destination not to be missed if you're looking for a break from the chaos of the city and the discovery of hidden treasures of Italian history.
