Territory

Turin is located in the plain and is situated between the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po. This river crosses the city from south to north. Turin is also situated at the mouth of some alpine valleys such as Val di Susa, Valli di Lanzo, and Val Sangone. The city is connected to France by the Frejus tunnels, both railway and road.

Foundation and Roman rule

The history of Turin has very ancient roots. The city was founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini and later transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name ''Iulia Augusta Taurinorum''.

Duchy of Turin

After the Ostrogothic rule, Turin became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin and then passed under the nominal lordship of the Casa Savoia in the 11th century.

Capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Kingdom of Italy

Turin was the seat of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1720 to 1861, although only "de facto" until the perfect fusion of 1847. In the 19th century, the Kingdom of Sardinia led the Risorgimento and made Turin the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865.

The territory of Turin is characterized by the presence of areas and buildings included in two properties protected by UNESCO: some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of Savoy residences in Piedmont and the area of the hills of the Po.

Turin has hosted important international events such as the International Exposition of Turin in 1911 and the Winter Olympic Games in 2006. In 2021, it was chosen as the venue for the ATP Finals and in 2022, it hosted the Eurovision Song Contest.

The city of Turin is known worldwide for some of its typical products such as vermouth, Gianduiotto, grissini, and espresso coffee. Furthermore, the city is famous for its cuisine and fine wines.

Turin is considered the third center of productive-industrial economy in Italy along with Milan and Genoa. The city is the hub of the Italian automotive industry and hosts important centers of publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, and enogastronomy.
