Origin of the name

The city is nicknamed "Riòlta" in Milanese dialect. The name "Rivolta d'Adda" derives from the combination of the words "Riva" and "Alta" (High-bank). In the Middle Ages, the village was known as "Ripalta Sicca" to distinguish it from other localities in the region that had a similar name. In 1863, the name of the Adda River, which flows to the west of the town center, was added to create the full name.

History

The Middle Ages

The first written document referring to Rivolta dates back to 1090. This document describes a donation of land made by the Montanaso family to the Church of Saints Ambrogio and Benedetto, built in the place and ancient foundation of Rivolta. Over the centuries, the city has been an integral part of different provinces, including Milan and Bergamo. In 1861, Rivolta d'Adda officially became part of the province of Cremona.

Rivolta d'Adda is also famous for its churches. The oldest is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and San Sigismondo, built in the eleventh century with frescoes by Ernesto Rusca.

In the city, we also find the church of the Adoratrici Sisters, the church of the Immaculate Conception of Santa Maria, from the fifteenth century, the church of Sant'Alberto Quadrelli, from the eighteenth century, and the church of Cristo Re, near the p. Minozzi Family House.

If you are in Rivolta d'Adda, one of the main tourist attractions to visit is the ancient castle, built in the sixteenth century. The castle of Rivolta d'Adda was built as a military fortress and later transformed into a residence in the seventeenth century.
