However, the first historical mention of the municipality is found in the Diploma of Grimoaldo II of Benevento in 724 and refers to a "Rigu Sundulum."

In the 11th century, Rivisondoli acquired the characteristics of a climbing village, surrounded by rocks and central to the cultivable areas and grazing zones. During the 13th century, the urban structure of the municipality developed with the introduction of row houses and stair-step streets. During the Middle Ages, Rivisondoli developed the Primitive parish church of Santa Maria a Fonte or dell'Ospedale. Today, the only surviving feature of the ancient parish is a small but monumental fountain.

Economy

The economy of the municipality is mainly based on tourism: Rivisondoli is a very famous resort for winter sports. In fact, many ski slopes equipped with modern ski lifts can be found there.
