Origin of the name

The toponym of Rivalta Bormida dates back to the year 985, when it was called "Ripa alta". In 1191, its name changed to "Ripalta Vallis Burmide" and, in the same year, it was also mentioned as "Castri de Rivalta de valle Burraie". The city takes its name from a "ripa alta", a high bank above the Bormida river that accompanies it.

History

Rivalta Bormida boasts a centuries-old history that makes it an important city from a historical-cultural standpoint. In 1216, it was established as a "Free Municipality" before becoming autonomously subject to the Marquisate of Monferrato in 1331. In 1487, after several sales and purchases, the territory was bought by the Marquises of Maranzana. From 1331 until 1708, Rivalta Bormida was a border fortress between the Marquisate of Monferrato and that of Milan. Over the centuries, the territory changed ownership several times until it became an autonomous municipality.

The symbol of Rivalta Bormida is the coat of arms: a silver undulated stripe symbolizes the Bormida river.

In the historic center of the city, you can also find Palazzo Bovio della Torre, which houses the parish house, Palazzo Bruni, used as a restaurant and exhibition space, and Palazzo Lignana di Gattinara, an ancient residence of the feudal lords of Rivalta that has become the seat of the Jewish Cultural Center of Alto Monferrato and the "Elisabeth de Rothschild" Foundation. The Pro Loco, an association that promotes the organization of local events, annually organizes the Raviolata on the second Saturday of June and the Fish Festival on the first Saturday of July. Among the other events not to be missed, there is the rosticciata, which takes place on the last Saturday of July. On the occasion of the feast of San Domenico, the "Orti Aperti" event and the Zucchini Festival are organized.
