Riposto
Riposto: the pearl of the Ionian coast
Hello everyone! Today I would like to talk to you about a small municipality located on the Sicilian Ionian coast, near Catania and Messina. I'm talking about Riposto, a town of about 13,815 inhabitants that has a lot to offer.
Physical geography
Riposto overlooks the Ionian Sea and enjoys a strategic position on the coast that extends from Catania to Messina. The town is conurbated with the nearby Giarre, where there is a very convenient railway station for travel throughout Sicily. In addition, Riposto has a modern and very popular marina, called "Marina di Riposto" or "Porto dell'Etna" for its proximity to the famous volcano.

History
The history of Riposto is very interesting and takes us back in time. The town was part of the county of Mascali, with which it was closely connected as a commercial hub. In fact, the name Riposto derived from the Sicilian "ripostu", which means "storeroom" or "wine cellar", and refers to the commercial activities that took place in this place since the 17th century.
For a long time, Riposto was subject to the incursions of Muslim pirates and corsairs, but in the late 17th century, the first fishermen's houses began to appear along the coast. The area soon became populated by families from Messina and enfiteusi from Acireale, who were transforming the still barren and wooded territory into vineyards and orchards.
In the 18th century, the powerful Venetian Pasini family settled in Acireale and carried out a policy of settlement and development in the area, favoring the formation of small farms. They also built a country house, called "Scariceḍḍu", which gave rise to the second nucleus of the ancient Riposto.
The town soon became an important commercial center, where huge quantities of wine and agricultural products collected in neighboring cities were deposited. In order to protect the ripostese traffic from the scourges of Turkish pirates, in 1751, a massive defense tower was built that bore the name of the Viceroy of Sicily Duke de Viefuille. This tower, the last defensive work built in Sicily against piracy, will be destroyed in 1923 by order of the municipal administration.
The Madonna della Lettera
One of the symbols of Riposto is the Church of the Madonna della Lettera, erected in 1710 by Don Giovanni Calì from Acireale. In 1763, with the approval of the Archbishop of Messina, the small church was elevated to the rank of sacramental church, with the election of the chaplain. The church, in baroque style, has recently been restored and represents an important historical and artistic heritage for the town.
