Welcome to Altarello: a small hamlet in Giarre

Hello everyone! Today I'll be talking about Altarello, a hamlet in Giarre, in the metropolitan area of Catania. This small place is located about 1 kilometer from the city center of Giarre and is almost included in the urban expansion of the Ionian town. A small part of Altarello also belongs to the Riposto municipality. The inhabitants of this hamlet are called altarellesi and they are really welcoming and kind!

The history of Altarello

The name of Altarello derives from the presence of a large religious icon where, in ancient times, brigands positioned themselves to attack travelers who from the consular Valeria headed towards Riposto. In the eighteenth century, the Capuchins, coming from Acireale, settled in Altarello in a small hospice. In the nineteenth century, despite the opposition of the parish priest of Giarre, Don Salvatore Fiamingo, who considered the area solitary and dangerous, the friars built a small chapel for the local farmers. Later, the current church of the hamlet was built.
