History

Like many Italian cities, Ripi has a long history. Founded by the ancient Volsci, the city changed hands several times before becoming a Roman colony in 306 BC. After the fall of the Roman Empire, control of the city passed to the Pope, under the diocese of Frosinone-Veroli-Ferentino.

The city underwent numerous invasions by barbarians such as the Saracens, Magyars, and Normans, which led to the construction of defensive walls. The castle of Ripi, which was located inside the walls, was the subject of disputes between feudal families who had obtained it as a fief.

Over time, Ripi came under the control of different families, including the Colonna who held the country until 1816. In 1870, the city became part of the Kingdom of Italy and was part of the province of Rome until 1926.

During World War II, Ripi was occupied by the Germans and liberated by Allied forces in May 1944.
