History

The toponym Riparbella derives from the Latin "Ripa Albella", which means "white bank". The historic center, dating back to around 1000 AD, developed around the castle and has a medieval origin. Over the centuries, Riparbella passed from the hands of the counts of Della Gherardesca to those of the archbishopric of Pisa, to be contested between Florence and independence between 1494 and 1508. In 1635, the city was elevated to marquisate by Grand Duke Ferdinando II de' Medici and then passed to the Ginori. Over time, it became an autonomous community.

Riparbella is a town rich in monuments and places of interest. Among these, stand out the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, the Oratory of Our Lady of Grace, the Oratory of San Rocco, the Former Oratory of the Most Holy Annunciation, the Baldasserini Chapel, and the Riparbella Cemetery. In addition, on the homonymous ridge of Poggio Malconsiglio, there is a wind farm with 10 wind turbines of 2 MW each.

Demographic evolution

The population of Riparbella has always remained stable, peaking at 1821 inhabitants in 1951 and 1576 inhabitants in 2001.

Riparbella was a stage of the Sanremo Rally from 1979 to 1991, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world.
