Ripabottoni

Ripabottoni: History and Symbols

Dear friends, today I want to talk to you about a small Italian municipality located in the province of Campobasso, in Molise, called Ripabottoni. Its history dates back to the Samnite era and over the centuries it has undergone several transformations. In the past, it was also known as Ripafrancone, named after the family that was its lord. Let me tell you about the city's symbols: the coat of arms and the gonfalon, granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 1985, take up the green and red colors.

Monuments and places of interest

Ripabottoni has many monuments and places of interest. One of these is the parish church of the Assumption, built in the seventeenth century on the design of the famous Neapolitan architect Ferdinando Sanfelice, who demolished the ancient church of San Rocco and some neighboring houses. The facade is tripartite and the Baroque interior has three naves with a wooden choir of the Assumption.

If you are in the city, you can also admire Palazzo Cappuccilli, an imposing nineteenth-century building located in Piazza Marconi, in front of the parish church. Very elegant in the lines, it was the palace where one of the wealthiest families in the country lived. Among the other monuments, there is also Palazzo Francone, a rectangular structure that comes from the medieval castle, modified in the Baroque era. The palace preserves scarped masonry and bastions and has a courtyard.

Society and Demographic Evolution

The population of Ripabottoni has declined in recent years. According to data, in 2016 there were just over 700 inhabitants, while in 1971 there were more than 1,400. This has also led to a decline in commercial activities and services for the city.

Administration

Below is a table relating to the administrations that have succeeded in this municipality. The current mayor is Paolo Scarselli.
