Riomaggiore
Riomaggiore: the pearl of the Riviera di Levante
Riomaggiore is a small town located in the province of La Spezia in Liguria. With its 1,324 inhabitants, it is the easternmost and southernmost of the famous Cinque Terre. Surrounded by nature, between the Ligurian Sea and the mountain range that separates it from the Apennines, the village dates back to the thirteenth century.
Physical Geography
The historic centre is located in the valley of the Rio Maggiore stream, which gives it its name. The village consists of several Genoese tower houses that follow the course of the river. The Stazione district, developed after the railway arrived in the second half of the nineteenth century, is located in the valley of the Rio Finale stream. The two valleys are separated by the steep coast of Campion, which is home to the castle of the village. The area is part of the Cinque Terre National Park and the "Porto Venere, Cinque Terre and Islands" World Heritage Site.
Climate
Riomaggiore enjoys a particularly mild climate, protected by the Ligurian Apennines and bathed by the Ligurian Sea. Summer temperatures are not excessively high and winter temperatures are not too cold.
History
According to an orally transmitted legend, the origin of Riomaggiore dates back to the eighth century when a group of Greek refugees arrived in the area to escape the persecutions of the iconoclastic emperor Leo III Isaurico. However, there are no historical sources that confirm this version. Only after the year one thousand, the inhabitants of primitive hill settlements were able to reach the sea, giving rise to the nucleus of the village.
The first historical information about Riomaggiore dates back to 1251 when the inhabitants of the district of Riccò del Golfo di Spezia swore allegiance to the Republic of Genoa in its war against the Republic of Pisa.
